Living in Tucson, we’re lucky to have access to some of the most stunning cycling routes in the country—routes that wind through desert landscapes, climb into the mountains, and offer endless blue skies and cactus-studded views. Some of my favorite rides take me through Gates Pass with its dramatic rock formations, up the long and steady climb of Mt. Lemmon (depending on how ambitious I’m feeling!), through the loop around Saguaro National Park with its towering giants, or out to the peaceful paths near Sabino Canyon.

But the truth? Most days, I’m riding a familiar 18-mile loop—one I could probably do with my eyes closed. It’s not the most dramatic route, but that’s part of its charm. It’s my time to think (or not think), move my body, listen to a podcast or some music, and just enjoy being outside.

Still, the very best rides aren’t about the distance or the destination. They’re about the people. Some of my most treasured rides are the ones I’ve shared with friends or my husband—early morning starts, shared snacks, and post-ride coffee on a sunny patio. (Ren Coffeehouse is our go-to favorite—great coffee, even better vibes.) We actually celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary on the bikes a few weeks ago, which feels pretty fitting for us since cycling is how we met in the first place.

Whether it’s a solo spin on my regular route or a group ride that ends with laughter and lattes, cycling has become such a grounding rhythm in my life here in Tucson. And if you ever want to ride, I’m always down—as long as we’re stopping for coffee at the end 😋.
