Michelle Allen's Chickens

A Few Things Keeping Me Busy Lately

Lately, my spare time has been filled with a few things that bring me a surprising amount of joy- and apparently, I’ve become quite good at keeping myself busy! So here’s a little peek at what I’ve been up to lately.

Michelle Allen with chickens and bread

First up: the chickens. 🐔

Taking care of my chickens has become one of my favorite parts of the day. They are ridiculously cute and bring me so much more joy than I ever expected. And now that they’re laying eggs, I get the added bonus of collecting the most beautiful eggs I’ve ever seen. They look especially lovely alongside a loaf of homemade sourdough bread. Pretty eggs + homemade bread = a very good day in my book.

Michelle Allen and colorful salads

Next: salads. Lots and lots of salads. 🥗

I don’t know what it is, but I love to eat pretty things. Haha! I’ve been having fun putting together big, colorful salads with all sorts of good things tossed in. There’s something about making food that looks beautiful that makes me want to eat it even more.

Michelle Allen's paintings

I also had the chance to do a local painting event here in Tucson with @artstateaz, @westinpaloma and @visittucson. I painted for about 4 hours, which was such a fun challenge. I actually love the pressure of knowing I have a beginning and an end- and only a few hours to get there! Trying to finish a painting while interacting with people throughout the event made it even more interesting. It definitely pushed me out of my usual studio routine in the best of ways.

Michelle Allen's horse pottery

And last but certainly not least… pottery!🐎

I’ve recently become a little obsessed with sculpting horses. I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of the actual sculpting part, which is incredibly satisfying. The glazing, however, is another story. It can still be challenging- and, at times, downright frustrating. There is definitely a learning curve!

But that’s part of why I love trying new things. There’s always something to figure out, something to improve, and something that doesn't quite turn out the way you imagined.

So that's what’s been filling my spare time lately: chickens, colorful salads, painting, pottery and a whole lot of experimenting.

So many things to do, so little time! And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
